Linkou Pure Land: A Tranquil Oasis of Mindfulness

Design by Szu Wei Lee Transforms Basement into Buddha Hall

In the heart of Taipei city, Szu Wei Lee crafts an underground sanctuary, the Linkou Pure Land Buddha Hall, that transcends the conventional to offer a space of serenity and spiritual communion.

The Linkou Pure Land project by Szu Wei Lee is a testament to the transformative power of design. Drawing from the Mahayana Buddhist aspiration for rebirth in the Pure Land of Bliss, Lee has created a space that embodies dignity and tranquility. The Buddha Hall serves as a gathering place for masters and adherents to engage in teachings, chant scriptures, and practice mindful meditation, fostering social and spiritual well-being within the community.

What sets the Linkou Pure Land apart is its ability to provide a sense of purity, tranquility, and primitiveness, aligning with the figurative representation of the Pure Land. The design's strength lies in its seamless integration of space, using transparent elements like glass screens and hollow-patterned walls to offer a peaceful retreat. The hall, despite its basement location, is free from the constraints of confined spaces, maintaining functionality while ensuring a naturally moderate lighting that simulates the effect of a skylight.

The technical specifications of the project reveal a 727 square meter construction area meticulously planned to include a classroom, reception area, and the main hall. The design team, led by Szu-Wei Lee, has successfully navigated the challenges of limited daylighting, ventilation, and air circulation inherent to basement spaces. They have introduced natural sunlight through the stairway and infused a botanical vibe with bamboo landscaping windows, creating a breezy entrance and a refreshing atmosphere.

Lee's design philosophy extends to the interaction with the space. The dimmable lighting devices clad in the ceilings reflect the Buddhist notion of 'may the Buddha's light shine,' while the wood-toned flooring and concrete backdrops enhance the solemnity of the main hall. The space is not only a place of worship but also a community hub, with plans to connect to a children's reading area in the next phase of construction, further enriching the cultural fabric of the neighborhood.

The Linkou Pure Land Buddha Hall stands as a beacon of innovation in interior architecture, where the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment meets the art of design. It is a space where light and shadow, nature and architecture, come together to create an experience that is both uplifting and grounding. The project, recognized with a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, showcases the power of design to improve quality of life and contribute to a better world.
